The producers of Yellowstone are working on a new true crime series based on the case of JonBenét Ramsey.

The new limited scripted series is set to explore the “mysterious death” of the 6-year-old beauty queen in 1996, which is still considered a cold case, as well as “the surrounding media frenzy”.

The show’s synopsis added that it is “a case that captivated an entire nation and left us with more questions than answers”.

Ramsey was found dead in her family’s home, and the case drew huge media attention, notably towards her parents John and Patsy – though they were never charged and in 2008 were formally cleared of any suspicion, with prosecutors saying they were “deeply sorry”.

The untitled project will be produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, which are behind Yellowstone. Behind the Candelabra’s Richard LaGravenese is set to be showrunner, and will also executive produce alongside Harrison Query and Tommy Wallach.

Meanwhile, Yellowstone is set to wrap up at the end of this year with the final part of its fifth season, though the franchise will continue in a number of spin-offs.

One will be led by star Matthew McConaughey, creator Taylor Sheridan saying last year: “He seems like a natural fit. We had a few conversations over the years, and spitballed a few ideas. Then he started watching Yellowstone and responded to it.

“He was like, ‘I want to do that’. And by ‘that’, he meant diving into a raw world clashing up against the modern world. And then I said, ‘Buddy, that we can do’.”

Spin-offs 1944 and 2024 are in the works, while series 1923 starring Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford has a second season in the works.

The JonBenét Ramsey series is yet to confirm a broadcaster or release date.
