The Abduction of Steven Stayner

On December 4, 1972, the small town of Merced, California was left in shock as 7-year-old Steven Stayner mysteriously disappeared on his way home from school.

Kenneth Parnell was a troubled man with a criminal history. He had served time in prison for various offenses, including kidnapping another boy years before Steven’s abduction.

After taking Steven, Parnell changed his name to Charles and enrolled the boy in school under the name Dennis Parnell. He told Steven that his parents had abandoned him and that he was now his father.

Parnell isolated Steven from the outside world, keeping him hidden from prying eyes and brainwashing him into believing that he belonged with him.

The Escape

Seven years passed before Steven finally saw an opportunity to escape. In 1980, Parnell kidnapped another young boy, Timmy White, and Steven saw this as his chance to break free.

He took Timmy under his wing and managed to convince Parnell to let them go on a camping trip. It was during this trip that Steven found a way to contact the authorities and reveal his true identity.

When the police arrived, they were shocked to discover that Steven Stayner, who had been missing for seven years, was alive and well. Parnell was arrested and Steven was reunited with his family.

The Aftermath

Steven’s story captured the nation’s attention and he became known as a true survivor. He struggled to readjust to normal life after so many years of captivity, but with the support of his family, he was able to move forward.

As for Kenneth Parnell, he was convicted of kidnapping and sentenced to prison. However, the true motivations behind his abduction of Steven Stayner remain a mystery to this day.
