The subject may be stressed and cannot control his body properly so the body takes over and forces the yawning to maintain stasis.
When one is being interrogated it’s usually really important so u shouldn’t be tired. So detectives don’t see the yawning as u being tired rather that ur body is changing its baseline.

Sounds like they are the kind of people who move from place to place doing drugs and using people all along the way. There's a lot of these people out there. Derek the victim sounds like he was very naive about people and believed that he could trust these two guys because they were gay also. I see this a lot.
