Friday saw the issuance of an arrest warrant for Xavier L. Tate Jr., a 22-year-old man from Aurora. He stands accused of first-degree murder pertaining to the horrific incident in Gage Park on April 20th, resulting in the tragic demise of Officer Luis Huesca. This crime-addled incident occurred in the 3100 block of West 56th Street. However, as of now, no arrest has been cited.
Interestingly, this isn’t Tate’s first brush with the law, as he was earlier indicted on a misdemeanor charge related to criminal trespass at an Olympia Fields residence just last month in March—a case that’s still awaiting resolution.
Officer Huesca was cold-bloodedly ambushed not far from his residence while returning from work. The slain officer was still garbed in his uniform, shedding light on the immediacy of the attack, during which he was shot multiple times. His SUV was subsequently stolen and later discovered close to the crime scene. However, his gun and badge mysteriously vanished, raising more questions about this already perplexing case.
In response, the Chicago Police Department issued a community alert. Central to this alert was the inclusion of surveillance videos showcasing a person of interest, intimately associated with Officer Huesca’s brutal killing. The videos provided to the public, reveal a male suspect, classified as “armed and dangerous,” navigating down a dark street and appearing at two different convenience stores clad in varying clothes.
It is noteworthy that the residents of a block in Aurora, where Xavier L. Tate Jr. used to reside up until last year, openly voiced their displeasure against Tate’s family. According to a resident who wished to stay anonymous, the families’ presence was marked by a spree of vandalism. This lead to most households on the block adopting surveillance cameras for their safety.
April 20th was meant to mark Officer Huesca’s 31st Birthday. Instead, a shadow of grief hovered with the formal classification of his untimely death as a line-of-duty fatality. This tragic incidence dictates additional benefits that Huesca’s family are now entitled to, similar to the case with Officer Aréanah Preston, who was killed during a robbery while returning home from work last May.
Further adding to the sadness, it emerged that Officer Huesca was a classmate of Officer Andres Vasquez-Lasso at the police academy, who paid the same tragic price in the line of duty last year. To honor and remember Officer Huesca, wakes are set to be held at 1 p.m. this Sunday at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home in Oak Lawn. The devout officer’s life will then be celebrated at 10 a.m. on the following Monday at St. Rita of Cascia Catholic Church in Chicago.
