The details recently brought to light through court documents on a chilling incident that claimed the life of a brave young boy in Edgewater are truly horrifying. He lost his life trying to safeguard his pregnant mother when they were invaded by a familiar terror embodied in Crosetti Brand, a man with a historical trail of domestic violence.
Jayden Perkins, a mere 11 years old, met a tragic end in his family’s home one Wednesday morning. His mother was amidst the usual morning rituals, preparing him and his brother for school, when past demons walked through their door in the form of Brand. NBC Chicago’s recent proffer details the unsettling circumstances surrounding this horrifying incident.
Brand, well known to Chicago law enforcement, had been recently released from prison, and yet held a backlog of multiple orders of protection against him. In spite of this, just 24 hours after his release, this individual with a well-documented history of domestic abuse led a lethal assault on the young boy’s mother. His criminal dossier boasts a 16-year sentence for charges as grave as home invasion and aggravated assault, his most recent prison stint being linked to violating an order of protection while still on parole.
The assault on the morning of the incident was hardly unforeseeable with Brand’s behavior as volatile as ever. A day prior, he had barged into his ex-girlfriend’s home, showing unabashed aggression while ringing her doorbell and tugging at the door handle. Earlier, he had attempted to assert psychological dominance through a hostile text message to the woman, threatening her and her family. After the incident, he turned himself into the authorities and was incarcerated once again.
On the day following his release, and hardly by coincidence, Brand forced his way into the woman’s apartment. The incident transpired when the woman was on her usual morning call with her mother. The dreadful series of events that unfolded are revealed in impressive detail by the documents at hand.
Brand’s brutal assault, marked by repeated stabbings, was punctuated by the woman’s desperate screams, using Brand’s nickname ‘Co’. Her mother heard her pleas for mercy through the phone that was abruptly disconnected moments later. Young Jayden, in a spirited attempt to protect his mother, was tragically stabbed during the violent encounter.
The documentation reveals the woman’s desperate attempts at escaping and hiding, locking herself inside a bedroom. This led Brand to kick on the door relentlessly. The calm that eventually followed revealed a scene plucked straight from the most horrifying crime stories: Jayden’s lifeless body on the floor, and her other son, a six-year-old, unharmed but traumatized on the couch.
Sound travels fast in tense situations. The frantic screams were audible to a neighbor, who relayed the information to his mother. She decided to investigate her concerns, knocking on the woman’s door, only to find no response. The graveness of the situation was realized after she stepped inside the apartment to discover the gruesome scene. As she called 911, the neighbor found Jayden’s mother leaning on her doorway drenched in blood, with blood spurting from her neck.
First responders arrived to find Jayden’s life bleeding out from his chest from a stab wound that had struck his carotid artery. His mother, severely wounded but surviving, was given medical aid. She and her unborn child were reported to be stable.
In the aftermath of the attack, a CCTV camera captured Brand discarding a suspicious shiny object over a fence before fleeing the premises. Authorities subsequently discovered the object to be a knife, smeared with an ominous red substance, assumed to be blood. Following this, Brand discarded the woman’s phone in a trash can.
Brand was seen on subsequent security footage heading towards the CTA Red Line station at Brywn Marw. At this point, he discarded his shoes and a pair of mobile phones before disappearing into the city’s crowd.
The rest of the footage reveals Brand being greeted by his mother, whereupon he swaps his clothes. Several witnesses familiar with Brand and his mother have identified the two individuals on CCTV.
Nearly at noon that day, police apprehended Brand at his home. He was found in a white t-shirt, grey sweatpants, and socks — all stained with what looked like blood. Forensic testing was conducted on the suspect’s garments, and the results were pending as of Friday night.
On searching his residence, law enforcement officials found multiple documents reminding him of the active orders of protection against him. Ironically, the papers serve as mere harbingers of his latest violent act.
Brand was subsequently charged with a chilling list of criminal wrongdoings. These included first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, home invasion, armed robbery, aggravated domestic battery, unlawful use of a weapon, and, topping it off, violation of a protective order, according to the prosecution.
The incident serves as a somber reminder of the shocking acts of violence that domestic abusers are capable of. It also illustrates an iron-clad resolve and courage that the young victim embodied, which tragically, was marked by a heartbreaking end.
