This is very common in certain religions, and it is rarely publicized as abuse until a child dies.
I watched a documentary on that woman that was that Gwen Shamblin cult documentary and I think it's called 12 Tribes where they celebrate abusing children and use religion as a crutch.
I am an Christian and I spanked my daughter one time and felt awful.
I immediately apologized and told her that I would never do that again.
Time outs worked for me, and when I needed extra emphasis I would put myself on mommy time outs and tell my daughter that I needed a break, which was punishment because she hated being away from me or me ignoring her.
These people don't deserve leniency bc they knew in their hearts and minds that this was wrong.
The rod in the Bible doesn't say physical violence, but is punishment which doesn't need to to involve spanking/beating/torture.
