I'm fine with it being banned because at the end of the day there's always going to be another app. It can make the opportunity for an app not based on China data mining. While also increasing literacy.

  • @semiprokeloi

the reason younger ppl aren't as keen to ban TikTok is because they have a better grasp of how tech works they (generally) understand that all apps harvest data, your phone, google, alexa, they're all harvesting data to work the way you want them to. This ban is not about protecting data, because fb would be first with the breach recently. It's pretty coincidental that America starts aiming at China right at the point China starts working to affect how oil is sold. seems very much like the Afghanistan war propaganda, it was all about democracy and retaliation, until years later it all comes out its about maintaining control of the oil. Just a thought.

Irs my birthday month laugh out loud

  • @fictionjunkie

Is banning a platform the same as banning speach? I'm not sure it's not like other platforms are unavailable but are other platforms more region locked than TikTok?

  • @Megaritz

The arguments for banning TikTok are insane and terrible. Banning TikTok would violate rights, and would arguably be unconstitutional on a sensible interpretation. Everyone who wants to ban TikTok is a crackpot. The anti-ban position is obviously correct, even though TikTok itself is still bad.

  • @susielm

Tik toker also has a YouTube page where she put out the entire thing she believes. It's horrible!!

  • @agirldownunder9299

Replay crew here: I think Runkle meant "Your "lawyer" may not be a good lawyer"

  • @beckyreed9763

I still have Tictoc on my phone because honestly I don't understand how the data harvesting is different from other apps, the only difference I see is it's china getting the information not US and both governments can't be trusted.

EMILY can you please cover the young thug trial?? They’re only in jury selection and it’s already so bonkers

Why not hold out judgment until more information can be checked out more thoroughly before deciding your child's innocence or guilt? This is what LE is supposed to do, but they don't always. There are parents who know when their child is lying and when their child is being truthful. Others parents are totally in the dark, either way. When accusations are serious, just believing in your child's innocence isn't enough to protect your child: It's the beginning. Trust and verify to support your child, so you can find the truth: A store receipt, time-stamp, time card, surveillance camera with monitor, ATM camera footage, recorded attendance, text messages, online activity, cell phone tracking, continual communication with your child's teachers, knowing what's going on in your child's life on a daily basis, and getting your child a lawyer. Parents could find out much of this supportive information on your own.

Thank you so to my Lawnerd gifter for my membership. I am appreciative of this generous gift. Replay crew right now as my favorite Longhorn, my daughter, is graduating next week! She is a dual degree earner and I'm so proud of her 💗 Very interested in Marketing and influencers because my friend posts merchandise she receives and I'm concerned about tax implications for her. It's my accounting degree rearing it's head.

  • @maryclark8661

It is probably what is known that Tic Toc already knows and the government is afraid it will be shared by Tic Toc.

  • @juniperfall

Omg we have glowing skin and we are hydrated lol!!!!

  • @sirdan7678

Your TikTok conversation was the BEST conversation in a long time! Conversations about Data mining, applications, transparency, the harm, is a real conversation that I want more of. Less of BitBoy and more of THIS.

  • @mightymarsha

    I’d be all in for a cruise lol… as long as I don’t need a passport… lol

  • @mightymarsha

Ya know you can order the chips from Canada online 😂… I love their Ketchup Chips… and their Coffee Krisp bars NOT AMERICAS… ours have wax in the chocolate… but Canadas is AMAZING… also you can order everything to make poutine… which is NOT what my little town considered poutine to be in the 70-80s…. It is most definitely not nookie… shagging or anything close to it…. I found that out when I saw it on a menu and bursted out laughing and told my ex “Canada really is very liberal when it comes to sex… it’s literally on the menu” Yelp my country girl was shining through for all to see 😂

Answer to a TikTok ban (which is giving China personal data of USA TikTok users which are youth in a large %) we are concerned that China built the platform to hook USA citizens with the goal of harvesting users personal data that is powerful for China. We need to understand how sensitive our information is and how powerful this asset is for China’s power against the free countries.
What if we don’t expect individuals to give up a platform until a federally funded project is established to program an alternate platform very similar to TikTok which is equal or hopefully as entertaining in a very similar way with the exception that it is safe & protects Americans.

  • @Multichick

@EmilyDBaker — US Citizens should be aware of the Data Privacy laws (one for each US state!) defining the forms of personal data that can and cannot be collected, processed, transmitted, and sold to 3rd parties. The EU also has data privacy laws that give users data privacy rights (GDPR).
China does NOT have privacy laws. In theory, TikTok, might take all the data in your device and store it in China (incl banking, insurance, health, home security, etc). – but that is not the danger… IMO, the danger is in the numbers of US Citizens willingly handing over their privacy rights by using TikTok — if 1/4 of US citizens downloaded TikTok, China would have complete access to the data of 85 million Americans. This is enough data to plan for attacks. The threat power is in the aggregate, not the single 💜

  • @kathidavidson4446

    Emily, you are spot on!

  • @juliabartlam2083

Grown ass adults SHOULD know to do their ow research and realize that they are ultimately responsible. I am sick of everyone trying to blame others for their failures.

  • @AC-xq8me

1:48:33 I have thought about what future elections could look like as well.. but the future leaders are the future voters too, and they will ALL have digital dirt. I think it’ll be so normalized that it won’t have an impact.

  • @AC-xq8me

You don’t need a passport for a cruise as an adult, as long as you return on the same ship you leave on. If you miss the ship for some reason (maybe you get ill) your eff’d… but otherwise..

  • @Amarianee

Am I the only one who finds it extremely disturbing that, there's this much government effort being put into banning an app for data harvesting (done by nearly every app), and little to no effort on the Fentanyl crisis? We got rid of Quaaludes, we can do it again…but no, TikTok is the biggest danger to our society. 🙄 The priorities of our modern government, leave me feeling like we're living in a dystopian, alternate reality, fever dream 😩

  • @Amarianee

    28:11 🎵 Some kind of superstar?🎵

It hurt my soul that you let that one slip 😂 It's ok, we can blame it on the ADHD and excitement over these shenanigans

  • @LillySmith09

No. This is a slippery slope when the gvmt can ban our access to social media. You are not wrong!

  • @sisken12

How is it this guy thinks he’s above the law? Leave the country; he can do UTube from anywhere.

  • @kingoffkingeverything4528

@Emily D. Baker QUESTION: And a genuine one. I often hear Americans pronounce United States “U-nine-teed” States. With an n thrown in. I just heard Emily pronounce it like that also at 43:03.
Is this what all Americans are taught in school or does it dependent on which state you grew up in, the dialect, since each state has a different dialect. If so, which states pronounce it like this? I’m just curious to know why so grateful for anyone answering.

What do others think about this pronunciation if they pronounce it without the extra letter n thrown into the word?.

  • @marjoriejune9787

I don't like TikTok so I don't have it on my phone.but I'm 100% against banning it.i see that as. An extremely slippery slope

  • @kimmy722

This is an exact reason why this country is in the state that it is in. All of a sudden, people decided that they don’t have to answer to authority. Whoever supports the defund police (which I feel started this kind of behavior ) congratulations.

Law Nerd Cruise!! Or Resort meetup!! YES to both/either!!

  • @faith-zw9qy

The government could just not provide smart phones. You can’t download TikTok on a Kyocera. Just my two cents.

  • @Will0wFire

I absolutely hate Tick-Tock. As a parent to two teens, and working in a secondary school, I see what influence it has on young people, who lack the life-experience and the world-perspective to discern what is harmful and what is not. Sometimes, what is harmful looks completely innocent.
Frankly, I also dislike Instagram. I'm not a fan of all the photoshopping making people feel inadequate all of the time.
It's not progress in the real world. As a gen.Xer, I can say that society has regressed in so many ways. I could go on for hours.
Quite simply, the world would be a better place without these apps, if it isn't there, we won't miss it. But someone will replace it with something else. If it weren't a Chinese product, people wouldn't really care, let's face it.

  • @janjacobs8260

BEST STORY EVER…SHIT SHOW ENDING WITH FORCED RETIREMENT. ..NOT TO MENTION THE PAIN!😂🔥💋🚬👠❣️

  • @VeganTrove

Emily, this fearmongering by the US govt is anti-China propaganda. One of the greatest invasions of privacy is the NSA. The NSA surveil you, the public and the world including world leaders. Look up the Patriot act. Corporations including YouTube are constantly collecting your data. Your smart phone is basically listening to your conversations and feeding you ads. It's capitalism. The US government is far more of a threat than China has or will ever be.

  • @karyng4448

It’s not the data harvesting . I believe Zuck wants his hands on the data(under guise it’s still America) but he will sell that data to Chinese anyway . The real problem with tik tok is a spiritual, psychological, and ethical one about what we are willing to subject our children and society to.

  • @storkbat

law nerds meet up/cruise does need to happen!
