In some cultures the brother is protecting or saving his sister from getting a bad reputation. Im from a culture like that. The men in the family are supposed to protect the girls/womens reputation and honor. I have never been promiscuous, but if I have been and the rumour would have reached my dad, then he would feel so ashamed because nobody would want to marry his daughter if others from our culture knew this information too. They can afford to lawyer up. Lawyering up doesn't equate to guilt. Prosecutors and police want you to believe it does. Even if you feel you have nothing to hide, you should lawyer up if you become a suspect or could be considered an accessory. Contrary to popular belief, the prosecution and the police department don't always get it right. Innocent people do get painted to look guilty in our system, so if you're in that situation, you should protect yourself.

We don’t know the cultural background of this brother but usually this is a significant factor in other cultures like Indian, Pakistani or middle eastern where the females of the family have to be protected from dishonesty.
